Frostrail roadmap and Early Access

Dated promises from Steam and the FAQ — not a fan-made 1.0 calendar.

Early Access Roadmap

FakeFish has not shipped a pretty public Trello with dated columns. What exists is better: a Steam Early Access questionnaire, a 2025 FAQ, and a year of news posts. This page is that pile, sorted so you can see confirmed, tentative, and not happening like Barotrauma. For test windows, use Closed Beta. For the feature list already in tests, use How to Play.

Confirmed direction (as of the latest store copy)

  • Platform at Early Access: Windows PC on Steam. That is the only platform they will fully confirm for the EA launch.
  • When: Q4 2026 Early Access. The store still says coming soon; it does not say “available now.”
  • How long: they expect about a year in Early Access. Length depends on feedback and on how their ideas grow. That is a target, not a contract.
  • Why EA: Shiro and FakeFish both have Early Access history. They want community input on features, balance, and “unforgettable” co-op situations.
  • What EA should already contain: the core loop described on the store — train, Eden Engine, scavenge, craft, fight, solo or online co-op for 1–4.
  • What they want to add before 1.0: more biomes, unique locations, dungeons, loot, crafting of items and weapons, train upgrades, and more precarious co-op scenarios. They say those additions will be shared as roadmaps over time — meaning this page will have more dates later, not today.
  • Price: not announced. They plan to raise the price at 1.0 depending on how much content lands. Do not pre-pay a number you saw on a leak screenshot.
  • Engine: Unreal Engine 5. That is why system requirements are still TBA and why “GTX 950 minimum” aggregator pages are noise.

Tentative — do not buy hardware or cancel plans on these

  • Linux: a developer works on Linux; they are “eager”; it is a tentative yes. Confirmed only at release if it actually ships.
  • macOS: “kept in mind.” Not a promise.
  • Controllers: in the plans, probably not at the start of Early Access. Keyboard and mouse is the controls assumption.
  • Consoles: evaluated for 1.0 and beyond. Not for the EA train.
  • Steam Deck: store lists unknown.
  • Crew size: designed for 1–4, will keep evaluating challenge versus player count during EA. Do not theorycraft an eight-player consist.
  • Smaller-scale modding / customizability: they will explore it. See the next section.

Not Barotrauma — mods, price, and expectations

Full moddability like Barotrauma is not planned, partly because of engine constraints. If you are buying EA to run a Lua submarine workshop, you have the wrong game. They left the door open for smaller customizability later. That is not a workshop date.

Same people, new talent. Many FakeFish Barotrauma developers are on Frostrail, plus new hires. Publisher is Shiro Unlimited (Shiro Games’ third-party arm). Support email on the store is support@shirogames.com.

Age ratings already generated in some regions (for example 16+ in Germany for violence, alcohol/tobacco, strong language). Expect a grim tone: blood, killing creatures and humanoids. This is not a cozy train sim.

Languages at launch (store list)

Steam lists interface and subtitles for English, French, German, Spanish (Spain), Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Simplified Chinese. Full audio is not checked. This wiki localizes English, French, German, Spanish and skips Chinese and Russian on purpose. In-game language support is FakeFish’s job; wiki language support is ours.

How to read future “roadmap” graphics

When they post a real dated roadmap, we will add it here and on the Updates hub. Until then:

  • A Discord mockup is not a date.
  • A playtest system (Relics, repair benches, multiple exits, clothing) is already in the pipeline — treat those as present-tense in guides, not as 1.0 dreams.
  • “More biomes” is future tense until a named biome ships in EA notes.

What you should do with this information

Wishlist. Play tests if you get in. Send bugs that closed beta can actually route. Do not delay a PC upgrade based on TBA specs, and do not skip Getting Started because a YouTuber said 1.0 is “any day.” Q4 2026 is a quarter, not a Tuesday.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Will Frostrail be on consoles at Early Access?

No. PC Steam first. Console ports are a 1.0-and-beyond evaluation, not an EA promise.

Will Frostrail have Barotrauma-style mods?

Full moddability is not planned. They may explore smaller customizability later. Do not buy EA for a workshop that does not exist.

How long is Early Access?

They expect about a year, depending on feedback and scope. That can move.

Will the price go up?

They plan to raise it at 1.0 if content justifies it. EA price itself is still unannounced.
